Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.

WHAT IS A CIVIC HOUSE?

New Kensington Community Development Corporation (NKCDC) hopes that engaged citizens will live at Orinoka Civic House—families and individuals who want to be active in their community and create connections with their Kensington neighbors.

NKCDC is thrilled to become a new neighbor ourselves in this part of Kensington. In 2017, we will move our main offices to Orinoka Civic House. Orinoka residents and the public will have easy access to NKCDC services, including energy assistance, credit counseling, household budgeting, crisis support and first-time home buyer assistance. Learn more about NKCDC here.

NKCDC began working closely with this part of Kensington 2007. We quickly learned that it is one of the most diverse communities in the city, and that neighborhood pride transcends color or country of origin. Kensington residents are committed to speaking out and working diligently to to make all aspects of their community better, and NKCDC is honored to support their vision.

Here are some resources to learn more about the neighborhood, its goals, and how to get involved:

  • Somerset Neighbors for Better Living is the resident-led civic association. They have monthly meetings and an active Facebook page.
  • The North of Lehigh Neighborhood Plan (2014) summarizes a long-term planning process, facilitated by NKCDC, that involved input from over 400 neighbors and partners.
  • The Kensington Community Poem video below includes writing by Motivos Magazine, Kensington youth, and members of Somerset Neighbors for Better Living.
